According to Chinese state-run television CCTV, the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the App Store consists of a total of 1.8 million apps and out of which Apple has removed 25,000 apps. While Apple didn't confirm the removal of the 25,000 apps, if it did remove that amount it would be equivalent to 1.4% of the total number of apps it offered. According to China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, there are over 1.8 million apps in the country's App Store.

The removal of the gambling apps has been widely reported, but originated from CCTV which claimed that Apple had carried out a "large-scale removal of illegal apps that sold fake lottery tickets and offered gambling services".

State broadcaster CCTV criticized the US company's management on Sunday for allowing gambling apps, which are banned in China.

In the past year, Apple has removed Skype, as well as hundreds of virtual private networks, or VPNs which are used to send secure emails, transmit data and access websites that are blocked in China.

Official media has also recently criticized the company's iMessage service in China, saying the company's refusal to monitor communications is a hindrance to authorities. As a result, this app has been removed from the App Store.

Apple has been subject to increasingly strict rules regarding its content in China amid a wider effort by regulators to create a "clean" cyberspace, which includes enhanced censorship policies.
