Owens stressed that the viewing and other events could not happen without a group she calls "Aretha's angels".

Her gold-plated casket was delivered to her home town of Detroit by a 1940 Cadillac hearse and will be on view at the Charles H Wright Museum for African American History until tonight.

A week of mourning is being held in the city, where fans have descended from across the U.S. to see the late singer one last time.

"After all she gave to the world, I felt we needed to give her an appropriate send-off that would match her legacy", she said. The service organization of predominantly black women planned a private ceremony Tuesday night in the museum in honor of Franklin.

The 25-year-old singer will join the likes of Stevie Wonder, Jennifer Hudson, Faith Hill, Shirley Caesar and Chaka Khan as they all take to the stage individually to pay a musical tribute to late songwriter - who sadly passed away on 16 August - at her funeral held at the Greater Grace Temple in Detroit on Friday.

The vehicle also carried the bodies of Rosa Parks in 2005 and Temptations singer David Ruffin in 1991. Indeed, a group of women was singing her hit "Freeway of Love". She was one of those people where no matter what you said, no matter what glowing positive thing you said about her, it would be an understatement.

He said the casket where Franklin rests is 24-karat gold plated. "She deserves the very best".

The singer will then be laid to rest at the city's Woodlawn Cemetery. The floral arrangements also had a hue significant to the singer - pink, her favorite color.
