Liberal Party deputy leader Julie Bishop left and Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull after Tuesday’s leadership spill

China hopes the change of leader will thaw bilateral relations that have been chilled for months by Turnbull's crackdown on covert foreign interference in domestic politics and on industrial espionage. "Australians will be just dumb-struck by the conduct of the last week".

'Both underlined the strength and depth of our alliance and the unbreakable friendship between Australia and the United States, ' the spokesperson said.

"To imagine that a government would be rocked by this sort of disloyalty and deliberate insurgency. that's why this week has been so dispiriting".

The new PM is Mr Turnbull's onetime ally Scott Morrison.

"Peter Dutton made it clear in April that he wanted to be prime minister", replied Bishop. "I have been a reforming Liberal prime minister".

He stressed that the policy had stopped the tide of boats and prevented people from drowning at sea when they undertook the long, treacherous journey to Australia.

The Cronulla-based politician invited Mr Trump to Australia during the friendly conversation. "I relish it", he said after rising to the country's highest political role. "And I look forward to potentially meeting him at any one of those", she said. "It is not a secret". It's the fourth time since 2010 Australia's prime minister has been changed by an internal party vote.

According to Glenn Kefford, a political scientist at Macquarie University in Sydney, Morrison's leadership is likely to take the Australian government on a more conservative course. Say hello to your 30th Prime Minister...

But while Morrison put on a positive and upbeat public face, many Australians were still seething after his elevation to the prime ministership by his party, in a vote initiated to try to boost the Liberals' chances of holding power in the next election.

The original spill motion was carried 45 votes to 40, meaning nearly half the partyroom wanted Mr Turnbull to stay in power.

Mr Morrison tweeted on Saturday he had shared the story of Anzac hero Leslie "Bull" Allen when the president called as a symbol of 100 years of mateship with the US.

"I can not underline too much how important it is that anyone who seeks to be prime minister of Australia is eligible to be a member of parliament", Turnbull said.

There was no indication Mr Trump has phoned the prime minister yet, or when the initial call would take place.

"It has 43 signatures".

Former home affairs minister Peter Dutton, an ex-police officer and right-winger, was the driving force behind the move to oust Turnbull after a Liberal Party backlash against his more moderate policies.
