White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett said on Monday the Trump administration is monitoring the financial situation in Turkey "very closely" after the Turkish currency fell to a record low against the US dollar on Monday.

Brunson, who has been living in Turkey for more than two decades, was accused of helping supporters of Fethullah Gulen, the USA -based cleric who Turkish authorities say masterminded the 2016 coup attempt against President Tayyip Erdogan. "Treasury Secretary Mnuchin is monitoring it very closely", Hassett, the chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, told MSNBC.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has resisted pressure by American officials to free Brunson.

The Turkish lira pulled back on Tuesday from a record low hit a day earlier, helped by the central bank's liquidity measures and news of a planned conference call in which the finance minister will seek to reassure investors.

Bolton and Kilic "discussed Turkey's continued detention of Pastor Andrew Brunson and the state of the U.S. -Turkey relationship", Sanders said in a statement emailed to reporters.

U.S. President Donald Trump tweeted Friday that he had authorized to double the tariffs on steel and aluminum products from Turkey to 50 percent and 20 percent respectively.

Transferred from detainment to house arrest last month, he could face up to 25 years in jail if found guilty.

The U.S. Senate in June prohibited Turkey from buying F-35 fighter jets in part because of Brunson's detention.

Following Monday's meeting between Bolton and Turkish Ambassador Serdar Kilic, U.S. officials have given no indication that the United States has been prepared to give ground in the standoff between the two countries' leaders.

Ankara and Washington's relations are deteriorating rapidly and the split gets deeper as financial sanctions from the American side against the Turkish continue.
