Both low and high carbohydrates in diet could lead to early death

"Whereas those that favoured plant-derived protein and fat intake, from sources such as vegetables, nuts, peanut butter, and whole-grain breads, were associated with lower mortality, suggesting that the source of food notably modifies the association between carbohydrate intake and mortality", the study reads. The researchers then performed a meta-analysis of other studies to confirm that those who follow low-carb diets and eat high amounts of animal-derived protein such as lamb, beef, pork, and chicken experienced higher mortality, and those that favored plant-derived proteins like vegetables, nuts, peanut butter, and whole-grain breads experienced lower rates of mortality.

You've probably heard about the high-carb diet and the low-carb diet, but a new study suggests a moderate-carb diet could be the key to longevity. A diet low in carbohydrates where carbs are replaced with plant-based proteins and fats is associated with lower mortality risk in comparison to those where carbs are replaced with animal-based proteins and fats.

According to study leader Dr. Sara Seidelmann, a cardiologist at Brigham and Women's Hospital, "Low-carb diets that replace carbohydrates with protein or fat are gaining widespread popularity as a health and weight-loss strategy".

To address this uncertainty, researchers began by studying 15,428 adults aged 45-64 years from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds.

Another important finding of the study is how the source of fat and protein affected mortality risks as well. She recommends that if you're following a low-carb diet to instead fill up on more plant-based fats and proteins-promoting healthy aging in the long term.

"Such differences in risk associated with extreme differences in intake of a nutrient are plausible, but observational studies can not completely exclude residual confounders when the apparent differences are so modest", according to Andrew Mente and Salim Yusuf, of McMaster University in Ontario, Canada.

Researchers estimated that, from the age of 50, people in the moderate carb group were on average expected to live for another 33 years.

Which doesn't make Western-type fad diets that heavily restrict carbs and fall back on animal-based protein and fat as a default look very healthy. In contrast, replacing carbohydrates with plant-based foods was linked to a lower risk of mortality. This means that those who had a low- and high-carbohydrate diet had higher mortality risks, while those with a moderate-carbohydrate diet had lower mortality risks.

Because this was an observational study, it could not prove cause and effect. Whilst high carbohydrate diets (common in Asian and less economically advantaged nations) tend to be high in refined carbohydrates such as white rice, may also contribute to a chronically high glycaemic load and worse metabolic outcomes. However, the researchers also noted some limitations; the dietary patterns were based on self-reported data which might not accurately represent participants' food consumption. Those with a high carb intake (greater than 70 per cent of daily calories), lived until an average age of 82.

"These findings bring together several strands that have been controversial", Walter Willett, professor of epidemiology and nutrition at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and co-author of the study, said in a release.
