Superstar Brad Pitt is denying estranged-wife Angelina Jolie's claim he's a deadbeat dad and says he's paid more than $9 million in child support.

And on Wednesday, Pitt filed his own papers in Los Angeles, calling Jolie's claims "unnecessary" and "a thinly veiled effort to manipulate media coverage".

In the documents, the 43-year-old actress/director claimed Pitt has "paid no meaningful child support" and failed to stick to the "informal" deal they had in place following their separation in September, 2016, after two years of marriage. Pitt reportedly "loaned" Jolie $8 million to help her purchase a house and has since contributed $1.3 million in various bills and other benefits for the children.

Angelina Jolie's spokesperson Mindy Nyby revealed that the objective behind the court filing was to ensure that their marriage gets a "closure" and that Brad could "recommit to their children", added the report. It's not clear what child-support arrangements the couple has in place during the divorce process.

Jolie initially filed for sole physical custody of Maddox, 17, Pax, 14, Zahara, 13, Shiloh, 12, and 10-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne.

Papers filed by Jolie's lawyers on Tuesday said the Maleficent star wished to have their divorce settled by the end of the year. Neither side specified what those issues were.

Jolie Pitt's filing requested a case management hearing, which would take place privately in front of a judge, to discuss the issues of child support and finalizing the divorce soon.

Mr Pitt's lawyers say the actor actually suggested this move and it had already been agreed to. Pitt's response said that a status conference that is already scheduled would serve the same goal.

Jolie's legal team had a few choice words for Pitt's filing as well. "Brad was coping with Angie's hard moves when everything was sealed, but now that she is changing attorneys and going public with her filings again, he feels like she has taken off the gloves and is fighting dirty", the source continued.
