After missing a short birdie at his penultimate hole, the par-four eighth, Snedeker rolled in a 20-foot birdie at the ninth at Sedgefield Country Club. Snedeker is the first to shoot 59 since Adam Hadwin in the third round of the 2017 Careerbuilder Challenge.

There was little hint early in Snedeker's round that something special was in the offing in flawless morning conditions, with little wind and soft greens offering a low score to anyone on their game at Sedgefield Country Club.

The freaky incident came during an incredible run that saw Snedeker pick up seven shots in seven holes, with five birdies, an eagle and a par.

Brandt Snedeker makes birdie on his final hole to shoot 59.

"I better be smiling", Snedeker said.

One of the quickest players on tour took typically little time, reading a little break and using his pop-stroke to send the ball tracking towards the hole and a piece of history in an event where he recorded his first tour victory in 2007.

"It wears on you and you've got to be really strong to overcome that and just know that it's going to happen, you just don't know when, where, or how", Snedeker said.

"Frustrating", Snedeker said. "I set the standard pretty high for myself because I know what I'm capable of and have done it before and I felt like I worked really hard at it, just haven't had the results that I wanted".

Thomas chipped in for eagle at the 10th but bogeyed the next, before racking up eight birdies over his next 10 holes. Arjun Atwal had a 61 in 2010.

Fox News makes error in Aretha Franklin tribute video
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) said her music would inspire people for generations. The music world has had a few days to brace for the loss of arguably the greatest singer of all time, Aretha Franklin .

The shot was fantastic, but his reaction once he realizes it went in is better still.

Snedeker has had a down year by his standards and entered the week 80th in the FedEx Cup standings. During his first 16 tournaments of the season, he finished in the top 10 just once.

"Never seen that before", tweeted sportswriter Ed Hardin.

"Nobody could see this coming - trust me, " Snedeker said. "Luckily, it kind of clicked all day today, and hopefully it will keep clicking for the next three days".

Then, he spent the first round showing it off.

"Crazy day. You start off with a bogey, a snap hook three-wood off the 10th tee (but I) made some long putts on the front nine and got hot on back nine".

The round could have been ever better, had he not missed a two metre putt for birdie at the 17.

"Could have been even more special, " he said, "but happy with the way everything turned out".
