Brexit Britain: Unemployment Lowest in 40 Years, Wages Up, EU Migrants Down

The jobless rate fell to 4pc in the three months to June, the Office for National Statistics said, down from 4.2pc in the previous three-month period.

"Shortages are already hampering firms' ability to compete and create jobs, so it's vital that the United Kingdom pursues an open and controlled post-Brexit immigration policy", Matthew Percival, head of employment at the Confederation of British Industry, said.

Between May and July 2018, there were 829,000 job vacancies in the country - more than 50,000 more than the previous year.

The high number of vacancies suggests that the number of Brits in employment could rise significantly in the near future.

The sectors that saw the largest increases in unfilled positions were health, social work and transport and storage.

There are 32.39 million people in work, 313,000 more than for a year earlier.

The economic inactivity rate among those below retirement age - Scots aged under 65 who are not seeking work, often because they are studying or caring for family - fell by 17,000 people, to 21.5%.

Koepka rises to world No.2, Tiger and Scott soar
Tiger Woods last won a major golf title in June 2008, when he beat Rocco Mediate in a playoff at Torrey Pines to win the US Open. He settled for a 4-under 66 and a two-shot lead over Adam Scott going into the final round of the final major of the year.

The percentage of workers employed on a zero-hours contract is now 2.4 per cent, down from 2.8 per cent a year ago.

"Admittedly, the ILO measure of unemployment fell by 65,000, pushing the unemployment rate down to 4.0% - its lowest since 1975 - but this reflected a jump in the number of people leaving the workforce", she said in an email.

There were 2.28 million European Union nationals working in this country in the quarter to June, 86,000 fewer than a year earlier, the largest annual decrease since records began in 1997.

This has been partly attributed to confusion among migrant workers as to their employment rights after the United Kingdom leaves the EU.

Britain's unemployment rate dropped to just 4% between April and June, the lowest level since the early 1970s.

Total annual wage growth slowed to a nine-month low of 2.4 percent, below forecasts for it to hold at 2.5 percent.
