Brexit Britain: Unemployment Lowest in 40 Years, Wages Up, EU Migrants Down

The jobless rate fell to 4pc in the three months to June, the Office for National Statistics said, down from 4.2pc in the previous three-month period.

"Shortages are already hampering firms' ability to compete and create jobs, so it's vital that the United Kingdom pursues an open and controlled post-Brexit immigration policy", Matthew Percival, head of employment at the Confederation of British Industry, said.

Between May and July 2018, there were 829,000 job vacancies in the country - more than 50,000 more than the previous year.

The high number of vacancies suggests that the number of Brits in employment could rise significantly in the near future.

The sectors that saw the largest increases in unfilled positions were health, social work and transport and storage.

There are 32.39 million people in work, 313,000 more than for a year earlier.

The economic inactivity rate among those below retirement age - Scots aged under 65 who are not seeking work, often because they are studying or caring for family - fell by 17,000 people, to 21.5%.
