CBS Acquires 'Love Island' Rights

Following the success of Love Island a year ago, Australia decided they would also get in on the action with their very own series, and it quickly went viral for a number of explosive scenes that make the United Kingdom version look tame. CBS has secured the format rights for the popular United Kingdom and global series.

"'Love Island' has been a massive success overseas", CBS Senior Vice President, Alternative Programming Sharon Vuong said.

The Australian TV site also revealed said: "With so much success for the brand, a U.S. version is also under discussion with American networks".

The match making show wrapped this years' season over a week ago but with series-high ratings, it became the most-watched program in the ITV2 channel's history.

These kinds of statistics are unheard of for American reality shows, so expect Love Island to make a major splash when it hits the U.S. "It's a cultural phenomenon that builds anticipation with every episode and creates appointment viewing-a pretty hard thing to do in today's TV landscape".

A second source close to the situation also said PIF was not taking part in any such plan at this stage. If a deal involves debt financing, those providing funding could expect fees of about US$500 million.

Love Island features a group of single "islanders" who live together in a lush villa in a attractive tropical location while on the lookout for romance.

In addition to the drama that comes with finding love in paradise, the Islanders have to form alliances, complete challenges and weather dramatic twists as viewers use their power to influence what goes down on screen as they watch their favorite - and least favorite - players find love. The contestants must choose their partner wisely, and win the hearts of the public, who will ultimately crown one lucky couple the winners to walk away with a cash prize.

Love Island will be back for summer 2019 and we're now on the look out for lively singles from across the country to take part.

CBS has picked up the USA rights to the format, which is owned by ITV Studios and Motion Content Group, from the commercial broadcaster's distribution arm ITV Studios Global Entertainment. "We're ecstatic the show has found a home at CBS and look forward to working collaboratively to engage its millions of viewers". The American edition will be produced by ITV, the British network that produces and airs the original.
