Kerala floods Thousands await rescue as death toll crosses 200

Indian prime minister Narendra Modi flew over the worst floods in a century to hit Kerala, surveying the damage that has killed 164 people and forced 200,000 into relief camps.

Vijayan, the chief minister, has requested extra funding as well as 20 more helicopters and 600 motorised boats to step up the rescue efforts.

Frayer reports that a red alert for flooding in the areas has been lifted and Kerala's chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan says the flooding "is under control".

Kerala, which usually receives high rainfall, has seen over 250 percent more rain than normal between August 8 and August 15, causing the state authorities to release water from 35 dangerously full dams, sending a surge into its main river.

Drinking water is being brought in by train and helicopters have been dropping emergency food and water supplies. He said that ₹10 million out of ₹50 million will directly go to the Kerala Chief Minister's relief fund, while the rest will be allocated for medical relief aid, the Gulf paper added.

The global community needs to understand what's happening in Kerala because the state will need help, he said.

Rescue teams were focused on the town of Chengannur on the banks of the Pamba River, where some 5,000 people are feared to be trapped, officials said. I am begging you. "This is my home and I will die here", said Yamma, who lives alone.

He said that the people of Kerala had been facing heavy losses of life and property due to severe floods, and Haryana is with Kerala in this hour of need.

"Now the problem is that with the water level coming down, it might not be able to operate the big boats and hence we will have to use small or rubber boats".

"Most of us here are Canadians and we will always be a part of Canada, but a part of us belongs there too".

The army said Sunday that 250 people had been evacuated from Pathanamthitta district, many of them sick after days in the pounding monsoon rain.

Incessant rains since August 8 have caused the state's worst floods in a century, and at least 186 people have perished, many of them killed by landslides. Once the water recedes, clearing dirt and bodies of humans and animals drowned in floods, and preventing diseases from the same, will be a massive task. "Even during Uttarakhand floods (in June 2013), Maharashtra had immediately declared financial assistance to the ravaged state", he tweeted. An immediate grant of about $75 million would be given to the state.

Some 40 helicopters have been deployed for the rescue operation, along with hundreds of boats and a number of aircraft and ships to ferry resources.

Another pilot, Captain P. Rajkumar, winched 26 people up from a rooftop after guiding the helicopter through trees and other houses.

"It was a very critical case, the lady was in labour, her water had broken", the pilot, the pilot Commandeer Vijay Verma told News18 television.

A video of his Sea King pulling up the victims has been widely shared on social media.
