United States drug overdose deaths surged to almost 72,000 a year ago, as addicts increasingly turn to extremely powerful synthetic opioid fentanyl as the supply of prescription painkillers has tightened.

The report, which the CDC noted was based on preliminary data, revealed that in 2017 nearly 30,000 people died of overdoses of synthetic opioids, an increase of more than 9,000 from the previous year.

Of their data, 29,406 overdose deaths involved synthetic opioids.

Controls on prescription opioids have succeeded in flattening the once-exponential growth of legal opioids, but an influx of illicit opioids has moved into the market to meet demand.

In Utah, overdose deaths are expected to drop by nearly 12 percent, from 751 in 2017 to 662 in 2018. Based on available death certificate data, DPH analyzed 4,302 opioid-related deaths in MA by occupation and industry to understand whether and how work and injuries related to work may have contributed to opioid use disorders. As some investigations can take longer than others, the CDC adjusts its estimate based on the number of deaths still under investigation.

The report found that workers in occupations with higher rates of work-related injuries had higher rates of opioid overdose deaths.

Federal health bodies have increased surveillance of drug overdoses and deaths in recent years to better understand the threat before them.

That represents a rise of 6.6 percent nationwide from 2016 and a death toll higher than any other cause of non-disease death in the USA, including HIV, homicides, or vehicle crashes. While carfentanil is the most commonly detected analog, the Drug Enforcement Agency has also noted other analogs, furanylfentanyl, acrylfentanyl and acetylfentanyl, present in overdose reports and deaths.

The CDC's 2017 estimate is not a final count. The number of deaths from cocaine mixed with opioid synthetics increased from just under 1,000 in 2014 to 4,184 in 2016.

Harp said the state Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services will provide New Haven with recovery coaches, training, dissemination of naloxone, and funding for a street psychiatrist.

Barbara Marsh, the assistant to the Dayton and Montgomery County health commissioner, says she hopes the trend will hold, and provide some lessons for other parts of the state.

Congress is debating a variety of bills to fight the epidemic. Nebraska had the fewest with just 8.2 deaths per 100,000, a rate less than one-seventh the rate in West Virginia.
