Discord launches app store with major games, indies and exclusives

The Verge reports the Discord Store won't house the same number of games as, say, Steam, but will instead aim for a "local bookstore" catalogue of staff-picked choices. You see, with more than 150 million users and almost 20 million daily users, Discord has become a huge threat for Steam, a go-to platform for games for many.

After making its bones in the VoIP and instant messaging scene for gamers, Discord is now preparing to take its service to the next level by selling games through its own store.

Right now the store is rolling out in beta to 50,000 Canadian users who will see an upgraded version of Discord Nitro along with a Discord Store tab on the home screen. The company announced today that it will be opening up a storefront with a carefully curated selection of titles. We were always longing for the next best title. Fantastic games that we missed. In terms of the curated game experience, meanwhile, Discord says it's aiming to reproduce the kind of thing you see in boutique, indie bookstores - the ones that have little notecards attached to shelves beneath books with recommendations from store employees. Discord's new store could prove to be a formidable rival. Your Discord game launcher will be able to boot up any game, even if it requires a separate launcher.

The business environment in the country is positive with increased improvements in the business confidence levels. This is largely due to reduced demand by investors as the dynamics of the housing market have changed.

Discord is also starting a "First on Discord" program which will promote games they've help brought to life. They're literally first on Discord - usually 90 days and then the developers can sell anywhere else they want.

THQ and Deep Silver are the first two companies to pledge their support for this new games distribution platform (per a report by Polygon), and others will likely follow suit in the coming weeks. Everyone in the beta can buy Dead Cells, Frostpunk, Omensight, Into the Breach, SpellForce 3, The Banner Saga 3, Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire, Hollow Knight, Moonlighter, This is the Police 2, and Starbound. Although these games have won rave reviews from critics, they also aren't huge "triple-A titles". "We think the new Nitro and store are a great way to do this. As the store grows, we'll rely on our community and our team to make the store feel super personal and focused on games that we genuinely think you'll enjoy".
