Disney sold certain rights to Turner two years ago, before it completed plans for the streaming service. Turner, which is owned by AT&T, now has the rights until 2024 to show most of the movies on its cable networks, which in the United States include TNT and TBS, as well as streaming on the internet.

Bloomberg is reporting that Disney is actively seeking to buy back the TV rights to their “Star Wars movies from AT&T Inc.s Turner Broadcasting, which would also included any future streaming rights. Turner is seeking compensation and replacement programming for the rights, but talks have reportedly stalled. Disney's service will launch in 2019 and will include a live-action Star Wars series from Jon Favreau, a new season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars and more. They own Marvel, The Muppets, Star Wars, and have decades worth of their own movies. Although there will be new Star Wars content, fans might think twice about subscribing if they're more interested in the older films.

Just like every other major company and network these days, Disney is launching its own standalone video streaming service.

Disney's Streaming Service May Not Offer The Original Star Wars Movies

Whether they'll be able to come to an agreement with Turner remains to be seen, but as always, we'll keep you posted should any further updates arise.

This is a bit of an irony for Disney, because assuming they do not return to the negotiating table to reach a more palatable solution with Turner, this means they can not put on streaming the six movies-and specifically three classics-from which so much of their current product derives. Now, though, with the BAMTech service in motion, the studio's already declined to renew their deal with Netflix, which gave the streaming service free rein over new releases, including the Star Wars movies made under the Disney-Lucasfilm banner. That accord expires at the end of this year.
