England captain Joe Root took Virat Kohli's "mic drop" gesture in good spirit and said the India skipper's mocking imitation of him had added to the spectacle of test cricket.

Undone by the skill and swing of James Anderson, Kohli endured a nightmare tour in 2014 and had a point to prove this time around, despite playing down the importance of the series on his career in his pre-match press conference. He still struggled to read which way Anderson was swinging the ball and the pace bowler found the edge of his bat four times.

The 29-year old surpassed his previous best score of 39, which he hit in the third Test of the 2014 England tour. Curran had turned the game on his head, and it needed a fighting hundred from Kohli to keep India in the game. India captain Virat Kohli smashed his 22nd Test century in hard conditions, he stood tall as wickets fell around him.

The first ever Test match was played between the two countries on March 15-19, 1877 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in the Australian city of Melbourne.

Root did at least bag one notable career milestone, displacing Alastair Cook as his country's quickest to 6,000 Test runs when he reached 40.

Alastair Cook was dismissed with identical balls from Ravi Ashwin.

Kohli was on 21 then, a score he would remain on without progress for 26 deliveries.

Oxfam Chief Executive Mark Goldring announced in May that he would step down at the end of 2018; his deputy resigned in February. Caroline Thomson , Oxfam chair of trustees, said the report made for painful reading for anyone associated with the charity.

Given the pace he bowls at, and his height, he needs the ball to swing to be threatening but, with a good breeze assisting him, he bowled the flawless full length, encouraged the ball to swing and looked unsafe.

Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin took four wickets for 60 runs in 25 overs while paceman Mohammed Shami had two for 64 in 19. Virat Kohli, on the other hand, added 91 runs.

Curran gave the hosts a huge boost as he dismissed India's top three batsmen, Murali Vijay, Shikhar Dhawan and Lokesh Rahul, in the space of nine runs.

Indian openers had given India a decent start as they added 50 runs for the opening wicket - the first fifty-plus opening stand for India in England after 18 innings.

Stokes, introduced after lunch, showed why he is such an important part of this England side with an aggressive spell.

On his own performance, which included three wickets in eight balls to make the morning England's, Curran said: "Personally it was pretty special". Murali Vijay (20) and Shikhar Dhawan (26) provided a solid platform as they repelled the new ball pairing of Anderson and Stuart Broad (0-40) for nearly an hour.
