Former CDC head Tom Frieden charged with forcibly touching woman

Dr Tom Frieden, former director of the CDC, has been arrested on suspicion of sexually harassing a woman at his Brooklyn apartment.

A former director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has been arrested in NY on a sex abuse charge. It said she reported it in July. He is expected to appear in court later Friday.

Frieden, who also once served as New York City's health commissioner, turned himself in to a Brooklyn police station on Friday morning, police spokesperson Arlene Muniz said. Helen Peterson, a spokeswoman for the Brooklyn district attorney's office, said he will be charged with third-degree sex abuse, forcible touching and harassment.

As the city's health commissioner from 2002 to 2009, Frieden oversaw efforts to ban smoking in public places.

In the 1990s, he led a tuberculosis control program in NY that lowered the incidence of cases that were resident to multiple drug treatments.

Frieden was the CDC director from 2009 to 2017, leading the agency during the Ebola epidemic.
