Boris Johnson burka row

British actor and comedian Rowan Atkinson, best known around the world for his role as Mr Bean, has defended former foreign secretary Boris Johnson over comments he made about the burqa.

"But I think what's important is that the procedures of the party now take place".

Mr Mitchell retorted: "We must keep some perspective; I don't agree with what Boris said - I think women should be allowed to wear what they want - but I do think we must careful not to go over the top on this".

"I think a lot of your listeners will be deeply anxious about the state of our democracy and free speech", he told talkRadio.

Following complaints and his refusal to apologise, he now faces an inquiry into whether he broke his Conservative party's code of conduct.

The former foreign secretary compared the appearance of Muslims wearing the Islamic garment earlier this week to bank robbers and letterboxes, although he said he did not support banning it.

Prime Minister Theresa May was quick to demand he apologise, along with the party chairman Brandon Lewis and Conservative Muslim Forum leader Lord Sheikh, and now the Tory high command have launched an investigation into his conduct.

And Bellerive is not a familiar course, as it last hosted a big event 10 years ago when the BMW Championship was played here. Phil Mickelson hasn't won one since 2013. "I only had to think about it for about a month", Woods said of the career Slam.

Critics claim Johnson is using the burqa comments to boost his appeal among right-wing members of the party. "I fear an eruption of anger amongst our party's core voters and grassroots activities if this obsessive political correctness doesn't stop".

The Tory peer said he had received a wave of abuse since speaking out against Mr Johnson.

The party's hierarchy tried to downplay the row, arguing that the disciplinary process was confidential. "That process is now engaged, it's under way and I'm not going to say anything more about that issue".

"All jokes about religion cause offence, so it's pointless apologising for them".

The actor, known for his comedy performances in Mr Bean and Blackadder, said the remarks were amusing.

"You should really only apologize for a bad joke. On that basis, no apology is required", he wrote, in a letter to the Times.
