Golf greats Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson will go head-to-head in a winner-takes-all United States $9m (£7m) exhibition match in Las Vegas.

Just about everyone thought Tiger Woods was done playing golf a few years ago, including Tiger himself.

The event will be broadcast on pay-per-view, and will be hosted by MGM Resorts International, and held at Las Vegas' Shadow Creek.

Mickelson, who has attracted nearly 100,000 followers in less than 24 hours on Twitter, replied to Woods, saying: "I bet you think this is the easiest $9M you will ever make".

"I'm done, I won't play golf again", he is reported to have told a fellow former Masters champion at the traditional event.

"We're able to showcase golf at a different time and different platforms and I think this will be fun. I couldn't walk. I couldn't sit".

Woods entered the week 20th in the FedEx Cup standings. He's 26th in the world rankings and is coming off an impressive second-place finish at the PGA Championship.
