Prosecutors relied on Gates to provide first-hand support of the accusations against Manafort.

That's important to prosecutors, who need to not only prove Manafort skimped on paying millions of dollars in taxes.

Welch, a 34-year IRS veteran who worked on more than 500 criminal investigations, is an expert witness in the trial.

Defence lawyers for Paul Manafort made a last-ditch attempt on Wednesday to torpedo the key witness at his trial by asking whether he failed to disclose four extramarital affairs.

In all, the pair of authoritative money trackers explained just how large Manafort's alleged foreign bank-account scheme was and how much he's accused of siphoning secretly into luxe purchases. Laporta was given immunity from prosecution for her testimony. He is also charged with bank fraud.

Manafort's accountant was asked about a purported $10 million loan from Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska. The income and the accounts, however, were not reported.

"Mr Manafort directed me to not report those accounts", Gates testified.

"There were hundreds of these", he said, as prosecutors showed emails in which Manafort requested transfers.

Meanwhile, Manafort's former accountant, Cindy Laporta, was sacked from her firm on Tuesday after testifying last week that she helped falsify his tax records, The Hill reported.

On Monday, he testified that he helped Manafort file false tax returns and hide his foreign bank accounts.

"It actually kind of shows in real time the course of months of investigation where they painstakingly did a jigsaw puzzle of records", former USA prosecutor Harry Litman said of Magionos' testimony.

Apple made the changes in the wake of the controversy over misuse of Facebook data by political consultancy Cambridge Analytica . The letter comes in response to an inquiry from Representatives Greg Walden, Marsha Blackburn, Gregg Harper and Robert Latta.

Konstantin Kilimnik, a man prosecutors say has ties to Russian intelligence, was also among the beneficial owners of some of the companies.

Prosecutors had braced for the tough questioning by getting Gates to come clean about his own crimes. He poked fun at himself Wednesday as he haggled with the attorneys for 20 minutes over the number and type of charts prosecutors could present during the testimony of the Federal Bureau of Investigation forensic accountant.

He's also had several heated exchanges with the attorneys from special counsel Robert Mueller's office.

The 46-year-old, who has pleaded guilty to conspiracy and is cooperating with the government, began the day by describing how he helped Manafort evade USA taxes on millions of dollars earned from political consulting work they did in Ukraine. Gates had testified earlier in the trial about one extra-marital affair.

After Downing asked Gates Wednesday whether he had multiple affairs, Judge T.S. Ellis had a private conversation, out of earshot of the jury.

"Mr Downing, I've made many mistakes over many years", said Gates, before being cut off by the judge, who snapped: "This isn't the time for that". Instead, prosecutors for Mueller have accuse Manafort of hiding at least $30 million that he earned while representing Russia's neighboring country of Ukraine and its president, Viktor Yanukovych, an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Defense lawyer Kevin Downing guided Gates on a tour through the wide array of lies he's told, and sought to paint him as a man not to be trusted.

Gates said he did not. He testified that he and Manafort knew they were committing crimes for years, concealing money in foreign bank accounts and falsifying bank loan documents.

"Yes, because I'm here to tell the truth and take responsibility for my actions", Gates replied.

On Tuesday, Gates did connect one part of the bank fraud charges against Manafort to his role in the Trump campaign.

Rick Gates, Manafort's long-time deputy, came in for a withering cross-examination as he took the stand in a packed federal courtroom in Alexandria, Virginia.

The face-off between longtime business associates and former senior members of the Trump campaign drew scores of people who waited in line for hours outside the courthouse and then jammed into both the courtroom and an overflow room that contained a video feed of the proceedings.
