Sloane Stephens reaches Rogers Cup semifinals

Australian 15th seed Ashleigh Barty reached the semi-finals of the Montreal WTA tournament on Friday, reeling off nine of the last 10 games to defeat giantkiller Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands 6-3, 6-1.

A nervy world No.18 committed 31 unforced errors in blustery conditions as Barty broke Berten's serve four times. However, the Aussie pulled closer to the Romanian with her first, and lone, break of serve in the sixth game, and held serve for the duration of the set to stay in touch.

With the win Stephens advances to her second consecutive Rogers Cup semifinal after falling to Caroline Wozniacki past year.

She then raced through the second set 6-1 with minimum fuss.

Stephens, the world No. 3, has had a productive 2018, winning a hard-court title in Miami in March and making the French Open final, where the 25-year-old by beaten by Halep.

American Sloane Stephens faced little resistance in her 6-2 6-2 win over Latvia's Anastasija Sevastova in a match that took a little over an hour to complete.

Halep will play for the title Sunday against the victor of the semifinal between third-seeded Sloane Stephens and fifth-seeded Elina Svitolina.
