"Hot temperatures were delayed in some places today due to extensive cloud cover and some shower activities", a statement issued by the weather agency said. "It is still expected to be warm and very humid this evening ad tonight with lows in the low 20s". Tuesday is likely to be especially muggy, with humidex values in the low forties.

"A cold front will move through late Wednesday bringing an end to the heat event", the federal agency said.

Overnight low temperatures will be in the low twenties, providing Toronto little relief from the heat.

There is a 30 per cent chance of showers in the afternoon with the risk of a thunderstorm, according to Environment Canada.

Monstrous giant squid discovered on New Zealand beach
The brothers contacted the National research Institute of water and atmosphere, which took an unusual finding for further work. Giant squid spend their time in the deep sea and rarely surface, so it's unclear how this 4m youngster ended up on a beach.

There is about a 70 per cent chance of showers or thunderstorms Wednesday afternoon, with a forecast high of 31 C. It will feel more like 39 with the humidity.

Environment Canada is asking the public to stay vigilant and keep an eye on those most vulnerable to the extreme temperatures including young children, seniors, pregnant women, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors.

The agency is also urging people to stay hydrated and to never leave pets or people in parked cars.
