McCain is survived by Cindy, his wife of 38 years, and his 5 children - Meghan, John, James, Bridget and Sidney. "He passed the way he lived, on his own terms, surrounded by the people he loved, in the the place he loved best", she posted. But in his upcoming book, "The Restless Wave", McCain reportedly writes that he regrets not choosing his friend, then-Connecticut Sen. McCain was one of ten Senate Republicans to vote in favor of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act that would bar employers from discriminating based on sexual orientation or gender identity and was a vocal opponent of Arizona's proposed "license to discriminate" bill.

American Jewish Committee CEO David Harris remembered McCain as a "statesman and a national treasure - and an avid supporter of Israel, an ally he first visited almost 40 years ago".

The Navy fighter pilot spent years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam after being shot down while on a bombing mission over Hanoi.

"We saw our political battles, even, as a privilege, something noble, an opportunity to serve as stewards of those high ideals at home, and to advance them around the world". A private service and burial are scheduled for the next day at McCain's beloved United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland.

Mr McCain was the presidential candidate of the Republican Party in 2008.

Family members said they were immensely grateful for the support and kindness shown by McCain's caregivers and for the outpouring of concern and affection by thousands of people.

McCain was one of the staunchest supporters of anti-Russian sanctions and was known for his harsh criticism of Moscow.

McCain had been a frequent critic of Trump, whose "America First" ideology McCain believed parted from the country's values. Mr McCain was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour in July previous year and had been undergoing treatment.

Mr Trump and Mr McCain were at odds until the end.

On Sunday, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders declined to say if Trump would be attending McCain's funeral.

During his last years in politics, he had a complicated relationship with President Trump, who infamously attacked McCain during the GOP primary. "God bless John McCain". But he also had a famous temper and rarely shied away from a fight. He had several with Trump.

My father is gone, and I miss him as only an adoring daughter can, but in this loss, and in this sorrow, I take comfort in this: John McCain, a hero of the republic and to his little girl, wakes today to something more glorious than anything on earth.

In July previous year, just after his diagnosis, he took part in a late-night Senate session and gave the deciding vote - with a thumbs-down gesture - against partially repealing the contentious Obamacare healthcare law.

Trump was furious about McCain's vote and frequently referred to it at rallies but without mentioning McCain by name.

For years, McCain declined to call his choice of Palin a mistake.

Talk show hosts Jimmy Kimmel and Ellen DeGeneres paid tribute and shared memories of their experiences with the Arizona Senator while Stephen King and Ron Perlman took the time to honor the war hero and take jabs at Trump.
