But in other races in South Carolina, New York and more, he's shown an ability to move voters to candidates who side with him and against candidates who don't, even incumbents.

Democratic voters propelled the charismatic, Sanders-endorsed contender to victory in a signal of the growing strength of minority candidates this cycle.

Facing off in the Democratic primary were former U.S. Rep. Gwen Graham, former Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine, billionaire Jeff Greene, Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum and Orlando-area businessman Chris King. The Vermont senator released a statement Tuesday night praising Gillum's "powerful" campaign message. He will also be running against Donald Trump, whose over-the-top enthusiasm for his Florida acolyte was on display Tuesday night, as the president tweeted: "Such a fantastic win for Ron DeSantis and the people of the Great State of Florida. That's what the political revolution is all about and Andrew Gillum is helping to lead it".

Despite being vastly outspent by his rivals, the charismatic and unabashedly liberal Gillum built a devoted following of progressives, many of them young and African-American, with his campaign message of social justice and lifting up poor people and appealing to Florida's growing diversity. Gillum has said he is not a target in the investigation.

DeSantis will be hoping to keep the GOP's gubernatorial streak in Florida alive heading into November.

'Not blood and soil': McCain's farewell message to Americans criticizes Trump
McCain was a frequent critic of President Donald Trump on everything from his leadership style to his Russian Federation policy. It's good, I suppose, that President Trump or his advisors finally saw fit to set aside his grievances and do the right thing.

In Hillsborough County, voter turnout was around 24.6 percent - including early voting and mail ballots. He easily won his primary, setting up a showdown with Democratic Sen.

Gillum spent the least of the five major candidates in his primary race and had the smallest television presence.

Florida's Republican Party has also taken a turn toward Trump as Blaise Ingoglia took over.

"We've been on this campaign trail for 18 months, and I've said numerous times that there would never be a poll showing the mayor winning this race until tonight", Andrew Gillum's communications director Geoff Burgan told ABC News' Tom Llamas and Rick Klein.

"This is our moment", Gillum asserted Tuesday night.
