There were two major changes in the team selection as opener Murali Vijay and chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav were dropped for the rest of the series. At 34, Vijay's worldwide future now looks uncertain.

Vijay was dropped after a disappointing outing with the bat in the first two Tests at Edgbaston and Lord's. The decision is believed to be made because of the conditions in England, where one spinner in the XI has usually sufficed.

However, head coach Ravi Shastri told the media at the end of the Trent Bridge Test that Ashwin, who was suffering from a hip injury, would be fit in time for the next Test in Southampton starting August 30.

The 18-year-old Prithvi, who had captained India U-19 to World Cup triumph earlier this year, is set to be rewarded for his consistent show in the first-class arena. The Mumbai lad has been in sensational form recently while playing for India A, as in 14 first-class games he has notched up 1418 runs at an impressive average of 56.72, which includes five half-centuries and seven hundreds. No one now playing first-class cricket has a has a better average. Vijay was also in a woeful form when India toured South Africa earlier this year and has 6 single-digit scores in his last 11 innings. "It's a good thing that he's got the opportunity at the right time, and I hope he scores big runs in worldwide cricket", former India skipper Dilip Vengsarkar told TOI. Among his 5142 runs are 15 hundreds and 24 fifties, including a highest score of 302 not out.

Seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar is again not included, having missed the first three Tests because of a back injury he aggravated during defeat by England in the third one-day worldwide last month. He was the leading run-scorer for his state in the Ranji Trophy a year ago. He has been back in India since, undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.

At the beginning of the series, the selection committe of BCCI had announced the squad for first three Tests only.
