But while animal protection organisation Humane Society International (HSI) - which campaigns around the world to end the consumption of dog meat - said making the practice illegal in the United Kingdom "can't hurt", it added any ban would be purely symbolic. Indonesia, however, is about to buck the trend. So, while dog meat eating is not specifically banned here these laws mean that there is effectively a ban on the practice.

He added the government was still gathering material to back the proposed law.

The promise came last weekend after a two-day meeting between the Agriculture Ministry and animal welfare organizations.

Global canine welfare group, the World Dog Alliance (WDA) is launching a campaign in the country demanding a full ban on dog meat consumption later this year.

An Asian Correspondent article in December a year ago pointed out that only 7 percent of Indonesia's 261 million population eats dog meat, and while the Muslim majority regard the meat as "haram" (forbidden) to eat, consumption by various other cultural groups is considered traditional cuisine.

Coroner States That Margot Kidder's Death Was An Intentional Overdose
She was still in good enough health to be taking on stage roles, including The Vagina Monologues on Broadway. Margot Kidder's daughter, Maggie McGuane , told the AP it's a relief to finally have the truth come out.

However, slaughtering dogs and selling their meat is blocked under the law.

To compare, Vietnam consumes five million dogs every year, the Asia Canine Protection Alliance says, while China is estimated to consume about 10 million dogs a year.

Numerous thousands of cats and dogs ending up as market meat are abducted street animals or pets that have been stolen.

"We stand ready to work with the Indonesian authorities to implement a robust ban, end the slaughter, and bring us one step closer to shutting down these awful trades for good".

"The dog and cat meat trade is utterly brutal, a risk to human health and largely fuelled by crime, so we applaud the Indonesian government for pledging to end the trade following our DMFI investigations".

In a press release, Mr. Syamsul Ma'arif DVM, M.Si, Director of Veterinary Public Health, warned of the impact this dog and cat meat trade is having on animal welfare in Indonesia, though he also pointed out its effect on tourism, commenting that "foreign countries find a low standard of animal welfare and cruelty unacceptable and will stop visiting Indonesia which is very bad for our tourism". Thankfully, after much pushback and campaigning on behalf of animal rights groups, the Indonesian Government has just made an announcement that plans to turn that reputation around, and improve and save the lives of thousands of animals in the process! "With our growing awareness of animal sentience comes a greater responsibility to protect animals from cruelty".
