And so the conversation will continue about whether terrible years-old jokes should be enough to get someone fired amid a politically-loaded campaign against leftist public figures, and whether the timing of Disney's decision left something to be desired.

According to Variety.com, Gunn had a meeting with Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn recently to discuss the prospect of having his job back but after a lot of negotiation, it's been decided that the studio would stick with their decision.

Insiders say Marvel president Kevin Feige was out of town and unable to attend. Gunn met Horn along with his UTA rep and the meeting is reported to have been very civil and professional but ultimately did not affect that decision of the studio giant. However, the studio is reportedly still considering using the script that Gunn penned for the film, the absence of which is a deal breaker for co-star Dave Bautista.

Disney and Marvel will now move forward with Guardians Of The Galaxy, Vol. 3 and search for a new director to helm the film. Instead, it was exclusively decided by the higher-ups at Disney.

Meanwhile, in a separate interview this week, Pratt said "it's not an easy time" for the cast and added: "We all love James and he's a good friend of ours, but we also really love playing the Guardians of the Galaxy". Disney tries more than almost every studio to hold onto their family friendly image, and rehiring a director that they fired for making pedophilic jokes would certainly do more bad than good for their image. Hopefully Feige will be able to find a decent director and script to replace Gunn for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is slated to enter production early next year.

It must be noted that both Marvel and Disney declined to comment to Variety on the story, but the outlet seemed confident enough in their sources to proceed with the story.
