"Later on when he became a US senator, he and Senator John Kerry greatly contributed to promote Vietnam-US relations so I was very fond of him".

Mr McCain died on Saturday in Arizona surrounded by his family, a statement from his office said.

McCain was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumor known as a glioblastoma in July 2017 and had recently made a decision to discontinue treatment.

"Senator McCain will long be remembered for his years of dedicated service to our nation", said Gov. Colyer, "We are grateful to him for his devotion to this country and send our deepest condolences to his family as they grieve his passing today". Our hearts are with his wife, Cindy, his children, and his grandchildren.

"John McCain has fought his last battle and cast his last vote", McConnell said.

President Obama ordered flags at the White House be flown at half-staff for almost five days after Democratic Senator Ted Kennedy of MA died in 2009. He will then lie in state at the U.S. Capitol on Saturday, followed by a national memorial service at the National Cathedral in Washington.

While in the custody of his captors, he suffered torture that left him with lasting disabilities.

He made a decisive vote past year that killed Republican attempts to repeal Barack Obama's health care reforms, and Trump never forgave him.

However, he also gained a reputation as a Republican maverick who was willing to cross party lines on a range of issues. The move reportedly infuriated Mr Trump.

It came after growing outcry over Mr Trump's lack of praise for the 81-year-old former Republican presidential candidate, with whom he frequently clashed ever since his 2016 presidential bid. "But we have always had so much more in common with each other than in disagreement", McCain added in the statement. "And to me, he was a friend whom I'll deeply miss".

Democrat Bill Clinton hailed McCain for having "frequently put partisanship aside", while his former vice president Al Gore said he always admired how the senator "would work to find common ground, no matter how hard".

From US President Donald Trump to Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, a number of politicians took to their social media handles to express condolences for the departed soul.

Rick Davis, former presidential campaign manager for McCain who is serving as a family spokesman, read the farewell message at a press briefing in Phoenix.

"At John's best, he showed us what that means".

Mr Biden wrote: "As a prisoner of war, John endured the worst of what human beings can do to one another".
