And President Trump has fueled that story line by balking at saying anything positive about the 81-year-old senator after his death on Saturday-even, according to The Washington Post, nixing a plan by John Kelly, Sarah Huckabee Sanders and other staffers to have the White House put out a statement praising McCain as a hero.

Tributes have flooded in for the former presidential candidate and navy pilot, whose family said had chosen to end his treatment for brain cancer after being diagnosed with an aggressive form of the disease previous year.

McCain will lie in state at the US Capitol on Friday, an honor bestowed upon few public officials.

The White House flag was eventually re-lowered, and shortly thereafter President Trump issued his first non-Twitter statement - almost 44 hours after McCain's death was reported.

Senator McCain was a noted critic of Mr Trump, and the President's response to Senator McCain's death has been closely watched.

In his closing statement, McCain acknowledged he was not without his flaws but said he tried to serve the country "honorably".

"We weaken our greatness when we confuse our patriotism with tribal rivalries that have sown resentment and hatred and violence in all the corners of the globe", the statement read.

Former Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama are expected to speak at the service on Sunday at the Washington National Cathedral.

"Americans never quit. We never surrender".

As McConnell spoke, McCain's desk sat draped in black crepe, topped with a vase of white roses.

"But anybody who in any way tarnishes the legacy of John McCain deserves a whippin'", Isakson said in his Georgia drawl. Burial will be on Sunday at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

The Vietnam News Agency said Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan sent messages of condolence to McCain's family and U.S. Senate leaders, while Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh paid respects to McCain at the embassy.
