Quick Step's Laurens de Plus took third place on the stage, finishing three seconds behind the victor.

Bennett's efforts saw him claw back some of the time he lost in the opening stage time trial.

"In Michal Kwiatkowski, I believe we have a rider who is capable of one day winning a Grand Tour", team principal Dave Brailsford said in a statement.

It's no coincidence that I've had three stage wins and a best placing of fifth overall at the Vuelta over the years. The other boys really stepped up and delivered us in a flawless position at the final climb.

Valverde made the first move to bridge across to De Plus forcing a reaction from Kwiatkowski who joined in the two-man uphill sprint to the finish.

I spent a lot of energy on the narrow climb, trying to stay near the front for the finish, only to be swamped when the road widened in the final kilometre.

Investigators call for genocide prosecutions over slaughter of Rohingyas
Myanmar has vehemently denied allegations of ethnic cleansing, insisting it was responding to attacks by Rohingya rebels. Myanmar rejects the charges but has admitted the killings investigated by Reuters took place.

The crafty Valverde then forced Kwiatkowski to the front before coming off his wheel to add yet another stage win to his career tally, his 120th. Mentally, it was hard to get over the crash in July and it wasn't easy to restart or find my momentum but I have still done some good training. "We'll go day-by-day from here".

Thankfully, the team delayed their selection long enough for a decent ride and fifth place overall at the Arctic Tour of Norway to persuade them to take a chance on me and I'm grateful for the opportunity to be on the start line for stage one in Malaga today.

"I don't want to appear presumptious concerning the Vuelta but it's not serious if I lose the jersey", said Dennis.

Australia's Rohan Dennis won an opening eight-kilometre time trial in Malaga to take the first red jersey of the 73rd edition of La Vuelta. He and BMC Racing team-mate Richie Porte, one of the pre-race favourites, ended up losing more than 13 minutes - both riders effectively ending their GC hopes.

Monday's third stage is 178.2km from Mijas to Alhaurin de la Torre.
