A day after testifying against longtime boss Paul Manafort, Rick Gates returned to the witness stand Tuesday as the government's star witness in the financial fraud trial of President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman.

Gates said that Manafort told him to get in touch with Philip Ayliff, one of Manafort's tax accountants, but Gates said he could only reach Cindy LaPorta, another accountant who received immunity to testify last week.

Rick Gates has been regarded as a crucial witness for the government ever since he pleaded guilty this year to two felony charges and agreed to cooperate in special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into possible ties between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign.

Ms Laporta, looking at a summary of loans to Mr Manafort and his businesses, said she could not see any indication the loan from Mr Deripaska had been paid off.

But she said she believed Manafort was directing Gates' efforts to disguise loans and hide income, noting that Manafort was copied on her email traffic with Gates.

Gates and Manafort purposely lied to Manafort's accountants, telling them he had no foreign accounts or interests, Gates said.

Gates also told jurors that he cheated Manafort out of "several hundred thousand" dollars, which is likely to be a threat Manafort's attorneys pull on to try to undermine Gates' credibility with the jury.

Gates testified that he knowingly violated federal tax law by not disclosing 15 foreign bank accounts owned by him and Manafort to United States authorities. Manafort is charged with 18 counts of tax and bank fraud. President Trump has previously spoken of the Mueller investigation, referring to it as a "witch-hunt", and reiterating that Manafort only worked for his campaign for a few months.

Cruz described the voice as a male, about his age, and said the only person he ever told about it was his brother. Cruz's attorneys had wanted it suppressed, saying its disclosure could hinder his right to a fair trial .

Prosecutors say Manafort used those companies to stash millions of dollars from his Ukrainian consulting work, proceeds he omitted year-after-year from his income tax returns. Mueller is also investigating possible coordination between Trump campaign members and Russian officials in the election campaign, but the charges against Manafort do not address that.

Gates told jurors that he helped establish the offshore accounts for Manafort, and that Manafort had negotiated with Ukrainian oligarchs on how payments to the accounts would be made.

In a court filing on Monday, prosecutors said they may call Federal Bureau of Investigation forensic accountants Morgan Magionos and Renee Michael to read from Manafort's emails. In court filings, Mueller has accused Kilimnik of having ties to Russian intelligence services, an allegation he has denied.

Gates told the courtroom that Manafort asked Gates to change certain things in order to obtain loans after the Ukraine income dried up in 2014.

Manafort's defense hinges on convincing a jury that it was Gates, not Manafort, who committed all of these crimes, and that Manafort is a victim of Gates.

In court on Monday, Gates testified that he did steal from Manafort.

But Laporta's testimony raised the stakes for Manafort.

Rick Gates dropped a bombshell in his testimony against his former business partner, Paul Manafort, in federal court Monday.
