A fugitive Malaysian businessman is now being investigated by the U.S. Department of Justice after allegedly laundering tens of millions of dollars that was eventually used to finance a legal team that included New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and one of the lawyers who represents President Donald Trump, according to reports from the Wall Street Journal.

Quoting anonymous sources, the U.S. news outlet reported that Phengphian had paid for the Malaysian fugitive's accommodation in Hong Kong and Macau, legal and advisory fees as well as to maintain the latter's luxury yacht ― Equanimity ― before it was recently seized by the Malaysian authorities. "We can confirm that Mr".

In addition, authorities in Malaysia have also charged him with money laundering in the case, according to the Journal.

According to a report, Thai businessman Phengphian Laogumnerd had paid for Jho Low's accommodation in Hong Kong and Macau, legal and advisory fees as well as to maintain the latter's luxury yacht ― Equanimity.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday morning that Jho Low, the fugitive in question, is being investigated for laundering millions of dollars from 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), "through two associates", identified as Phengphian Laogumnerd and Pras Michel.

The Kasowitz firm is representing Low in the ongoing investigation of people believed to be involved in raising funds for 1MDB and siphoning them after the fact.

The newspaper said that since 2016 banks have curtailed Low's access to funds - making it hard for him to pay legal expenses.

Hidden figures: Katherine Johnson clocks 100, honoured with life-size statue
Since her childhood in a segregated White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, Katherine Johnson has spent a lot of time counting. In the 1960s, she used her knowledge of numbers to help pioneer space expeditions that helped shape America.

There is, at this time, no evidence to suggest those who received payment were aware of the money's origin.

Low's representatives didn't respond to requests for comment for the article.

That legal team includes names like Christie, longtime Trump attorney Marc Kasowitz, and Bobby Burchfield.

The newspaper reported that the DOJ filed civil lawsuits in July 2016 and past year to recover assets from Low and others that were allegedly purchased with money embezzled from a Malaysian fund, 1Malaysia Development Bhd.

Citing a spokesperson for the former governor, WSJ said Christie is representing Low in two asset-forefeiture cases in California. "Here, as with all of our clients, our job as attorneys is to represent and vindicate our clients' interests", said Mike Geller, a spokesman for the firm.

Burchfield told the newspaper that Low retained his law firm, King & Spalding, to "advise him on the ongoing investigations" and that the firm "performed appropriate due diligence on sources of payment". "No inquiry made to him by the Department of Justice with regard to any other investigation regarding funding or otherwise".
