Marcel Brands: 'Everton paid over the odds to sign Richarlison from Watford'

The two young defenders both arrived on transfer deadline day, Mina in a permanent move from Barcelona and Zouma on a loan deal from Chelsea, and writing for the Liverpool Echo, Ball said if they're ready to play he would like to see both included.

Brands revealed that Mina, who has cost an initial £28.5million, was manager Marco Silva's prime target and Everton was always the player's preferred destination.

"No, no, it was really simple behind the scenes", Brands said when asked about that aspect of the deal. "We were convinced with him but I think with the situation with Watford we had to pay a little more". We never changed our offer.

"I was watching England versus Colombia in the house of Farhad with the chairman and Marco and I said: 'S***, he's scored'". That was a great thing for us but you never know if Manchester United come in and offer an extra £150,000 a week - every player would like that. "I knew him before he went to Watford".

"In the end it went the right direction, but I was a little bit unsure what would happen in the last days". That's why we were also keen on back-ups. I don't know exactly the situation with Man United but of course Barcelona used it. 'I went to Barcelona twice at the end of June to speak about a few players as Lucas Digne was on our list with Mina, ' said Brands.

Mina had returned to Barcelona off the back of an impressive World Cup campaign with Colombia, in which he had found the net on three occasions.

The next four years will be "anomalously warm" as temperatures increase on top of the global warming trend, researchers have warned.

"I asked about Gomes and they said no, he was only for sale. At first they were not so happy with that but in the end they came back and said maybe it could be an option".

"You saw in the past in the Premier League that if you only spend money, that is not the guarantee for success".

"From the other side, the new market was closing earlier and the other countries waited until the end, because they know what Premier League clubs can do - so that did not help me".

"We thought it would be a very hard one because of the history of the clubs", Brands told reporters of Everton's attempt to sign Richarlison.

"He has a lot of speed, the capability to work; he is strong and he is tall". They are important qualities.

"We have improved the squad and that was the (first) goal".
