Charles McDaniel Jr. was only 3 years old in 1950 when he and his brother Larry were told that their father, Army Master Sgt. Charles McDaniel had been lost in the Korean War.

And McDaniel's status would remain that way for almost 70 years, until his dog tag made it into one of the 55 boxes of USA service members remains, repatriated back to the US from North Korea late last month.

On Aug. 2, a phone call to the Indianapolis home of retired Army Chaplain (Col.) Charles McDaniel Jr. answered that question.

Nearly 68 years after Sgt. McDaniel, a World War II veteran and Army medic, vanished in the disastrous fight with Chinese communist forces around Unsan, the Army on Wednesday gave his tattered dog tag to his sons. Last month's transfer is the first from North Korea in more than a decade.

The long-awaited handover of the American remains was a key tenet from the historic June summit in Singapore between President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

The sons discussed the return of their father's dog tag at a news conference in Arlington, Virginia. "I'm his oldest son".

"He's an Army guy. It was your father's'".

Charles Jr. acknowledged to reporters that it's unclear whether his father's remains might actually be contained among the boxes and that in the end he and is brother might only have the dog tag, but that might not matter - "which is wonderful", he said.

He was with the 1st Cavalry Division and part of the occupation of Japan after the war. "Many of the Korean war families were very frustrated..."

Additionally, a medic who was also assigned to the 3rd Battalion told officials "he believed that McDaniel was killed in action within the 3rd Battalion's perimeter", according to the DPAA. His company in the regiment's Third Battalion was sent with the rest of 1st Cavalry to reinforce the South Korean Army's 1st and 6th Division near the North Korean city.

Pyongyang had kept its US counterparts in limbo over when the remains would begin their long trek back to America, at one point failing to appear at a scheduled meeting to discuss the handover with an American delegation in South Korea. ". More than 600 officers and men were lost at Unsan, a lot of them from the 3rd Battalion".

Officials from the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) have said initial analysis indicates the remains are of USA service members from the Korean War as believed. Larry McDaniel said he doesn't remember his father. The family went home to southern Indiana.

"I really don't know anything about him", said Larry. "But I sat there and I cried for a while and it took a while to compose myself".

"I have to say I didn't think about the emotions that were very deep even though I was a small boy and have very little memory of my father", he said.

"I'm proud that my father was extremely patriotic, loved the country to death, that he was able to dedicate his entire life for the country without hesitation", said Larry. He "generates" an idea of what he was like, based on what people have said about him.

The dog tag was returned to Charles McDaniel Jr. and his younger brother Larry McDaniel during a press conference in Arlington, Va., where officials gave an update on the status of the repatriated remains from North Korea.

Dr. John Byrd, Director of the DPAA, cautioned that because the North Koreans admitted numerous remains had been interspersed, there is no way of knowing yet whether the remains with which the stainless steel dog tag were delivered actually belong to McDaniel.

Most of the remains in the boxes were bone fragments, he said. In past repatriations, several individuals' remains were represented in one box, he said. And that DNA must then be compared with DNA taken from a potential family member to see if it matches. But it is unlikely any of them will ever be associated with a specific soldier, the Pentagon officials said.

As a demonstration at the briefing Wednesday, Timothy.

Most died on the battlefield and were buried in shallow graves or in cemeteries that were meant to be temporary. It was the largest unilateral turnover of remains from the North Koreans to the United States on record, but it's not clear how many individuals were contained in the 55 boxes.

On July 27, Byrd and a USA team flew to Wonsan on North Korea's east coast, where they picked up the 55 cases and then flew to Osan Air Base, south of Seoul. Not captured by communist Chinese and North Korean forces.
