Giant squid spend their time in the deep sea and rarely surface, so it's unclear how this 4m youngster ended up on a beach.

An enormous 14-foot long squid has washed up on the shores of Wellington, New Zealand, prompting images of the colossal cephalopod to go viral.

That morning the three brothers went to the coast of Wellington, to go diving, when I came across a odd creature.

Even worse, the one the Alpin brothers found could be considered a runt when compared to other giant squids.

According to BGR, giant squids are known to reach maximum lengths of 40 feet, which makes the Aplin brothers' find small by comparison, but the animal's extremely reclusive tendencies still make the sighting quite notable.

After a few quick snaps, the boys whipped out a tape measure. Dan is a member of the Ocean Hunter Spearfishing & Freediving Specialists in Wellington, which posted several images of the impressive squid to its Facebook page.

Country Garden's shares pared gains to 2.2 per cent after Dr Mahathir's comments, having risen as much as 3.9 per cent earlier. But critics said the deals were unfavourable to Malaysia.

The brothers said they had come across sharks while on their diving trips but had never seen a squid of that size. Measurements show that the creature was 4.2-meter-long.

Both species of squid are formidable sea creatures, with giant squid typically reaching 16 feet (5 m) long, according to the Smithsonian, and the colossal squid reaching over 30 feet (10 m) long, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature. As for what squids eat, they prefer other squid species or deep-sea fish, catching them with two tentacles and gripping them with their serrated rings. "Bugger seeing that in the water", one man wrote.

'It was pretty clean, nothing major on it, ' Aplin said. "It's not common but it's not rare", said a spokesperson for the department.

The brothers contacted the National research Institute of water and atmosphere, which took an unusual finding for further work.

A year ago a 15.2 metre squid washed up in Indonesia. "There was a scratch on the top of its head but smaller than a lighter, tiny, wouldn't think that's what killed it".
