Heavy rain forced the cancellation of races across all classes.

Meanwhile the chance of rain increased as the day went on, which meant come the eventful start, all 12 riders were keen to get on with qualifying.

However they couldn't avoid a downpour and with the Siverstone track soaking, the race was continually delayed throughout the day before eventually being called off at 4pm.

The 2018 British MotoGP at Silverstone was rained off after bad weather deemed the conditions to be too unsafe to race in.

Jorge Lorenzo took pole position for the British round of the MotoGP championship in yesterday's qualifying session.

Spanish rider Jorge Lorenzo, victor of the previous race in Austria two weeks ago, had been due to start on pole position on Sunday.

Champion Marc Marquez has 201 points to lead the standings, ahead of Valentino Rossi (142) and Lorenzo (130).

The downforce is also boosted by the rear diffuser, which was designed for greater efficiency and accommodates four tailpipes. The top speed of the vehicle though is slower since the extra aero bits on the auto put a lot lot more stress on the tyres.

Home racer Bradley Smith was quickest in the first session in 2mins 13.340secs and improved by almost two seconds in Q2 to qualify eighth for Sunday's race.

With the rules stipulating that the medical helicopter be present at all times, the session had to be delayed until it returned.

Saturday's afternoon practice session had been interrupted after Spanish rider Tito Rabat suffered leg injuries after crashing at Stowe corner.

Lorenzo, three times a victor at the famous Northamptonshire track, clocked two minutes, 10.155 seconds to secure pole in a second qualifying session that started an hour late for safety reasons, with parts of the track wet following heavy rain.

"We did everything we possibly could to run an event today".

"The aquaplaning was very risky; I nearly crashed, and many other riders fell almost one after the other".
