NASA's Parker Solar Probe lifts off successfully

Before Sending A Probe To The Sun, Make Sure It Can Take The Heat

We will remind, on the eve of NASA postponed the launch of solar probe Parker.

If all goes well, the Parker Solar Probe will fly straight through the wispy edges of the sun's corona, or outer atmosphere, in November.

It is the first space craft to be named after a living person - astrophysicist Eugene Parker, 91, who first described solar wind in 1958.

The car-sized probe is created to give scientists a better understanding of solar wind and geomagnetic storms that risk wreaking chaos on Earth by knocking out the power grid.

Parker, the probe, will start shattering records this fall.

The primary science goals for the mission are to trace how energy and heat move through the solar corona and to explore what accelerates the solar wind as well as solar energetic particles.

Dubbed the mission to touch the Sun, Parker Solar Probe will get closer to the Sun that any other spacecraft ever has.

"The Parker Solar Probe will help us do a much better job of predicting when a disturbance in the solar wind could hit Earth", said Justin Kasper, a project scientist and professor at the University of MI.

Altogether, the Parker probe will make 24 close approaches to our star during the seven-year, $1.5 billion journey.

Zooming through space in a highly elliptical orbit, the Parker Solar Probe will reach speeds of up to 700,000 kms per hour, setting the record for the fastest spacecraft in history.

Marlins hit Ronald Acuna to spark fight in first inning
Trainer George Poulis hovered over Acuna, who sat on the ground near the batter's box while players swarmed near the mound. Per MLB rules, consecutive-game hitting streaks remain active as long as the batter does not record an official at-bat.

The spacecraft successfully separated from the carrier rocket and deployed its solar arrays shortly after launch.

Even in a region where temperatures can reach more than a million degrees Fahrenheit, the sunlight is expected to heat the shield to just around 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit (1,371 degrees Celsius).

"The spacecraft is in good health and operating on its own".

SWEAP (Solar Wind Electrons Alphas and Protons Investigation) consists of two instruments- the Solar Probe Cup and the Solar Probe Analyzers- that work together to gather particles found in solar wind and then measure their properties.

The probe is created to plunge into the Sun's atmosphere, known as the corona, during a seven-year mission.

The investigation of our Sun is vital to our understanding of solar wind and the environment of space.

It will face brutal heat and radiation conditions to provide researchers with the closest observations of a star.

The $1.5bn (£1.17bn) project is created to give scientists a better understanding of solar wind and geomagnetic storms that risk wreaking chaos on Earth by knocking out the power grid. Finally, the probe will give us more information about some of the most basic processes of our Sun so we can better understand stars in general.

The University of Chicago professor said he had been biting his nails in anticipation.
