For Cervical Cancer Screening, Women Over 30 Can Now Choose The HPV Test Only

Older women have a choice: from age 30 to 65 they can get Pap tests every three years. For women aged 30 to 65, the USPSTF recommends screening via a Pap smear every 3 years, or HPV (human papillomavirus) testing every 5 years or with both tests, also every 5 years.

From 21 to 29, women should get screened every three years with a Pap test, which detects abnormal cells but can not detect HPV.

HPV causes the vast majority of cervical cancer cases, according to the National Cancer Institute, which makes HPV testing an effective preventative measure.

Women over 65 who have had recent negative tests also can forgo testing if they wish.

A Pap test looks for changes in cells from the cervix that indicate cancer or precancerous changes, according to the U.S. Office on Women's Health. It is not recommended that women under 21 should not be tested, as cervical cancer before the age of 21 is rare.

She said the guidelines may make it easier for women in areas with fewer doctors or clinics to get tested. This marks the first USPSTF recommendation update since 2012. While co-testing is still preferable, the new standards mean women can avoid harm caused by having too frequent screenings, such as unnecessary biopsies and follow-up appointments. That means there is no need to have simultaneous pap tests. "And we now have tests for HPV and that's an important step forward". (Boys and young men are encouraged to get the HPV vaccine as well.) But Owens says a vaccine alone doesn't replace cervical cancer screening.

"It is not like you get HPV and then you get cancer", Schmeler said.

Women may not notice the difference between tests because tissue samples are all collected the same way. Are you a woman over age 30?

In the past, cervical cancer was one of the most common cancer killers of American women.

'We don't want to turn a lot of well women into patients'.

A leading obstetrician/gynecologist Lee A. Learman, M.D., Ph.D., senior associate dean for Graduate Medical Education and Academic Affairs and professor at Florida Atlantic University's Schmidt College of Medicine, is lead author of an editorial in this JAMA issue.

"Our work demonstrated that there is now strong evidence for the effectiveness of high-risk HPV testing used alone as a cervical cancer screening test", said Melnikow.

In addition, 10 years after approval of the first HPV prophylactic vaccine in the USA, only 43 percent of adolescents (50 percent of girls and 38 percent of boys) were up to date with the HPV vaccination guidelines, compared with 88 percent for tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis vaccine.

The best news from this study is the number of deaths from cervical cancer in the U.S. has decreased substantially since the implementation of widespread cervical cancer screening. Sales of Cervical Cancer Diagnostic Tests on the basis of each region for each year is analyzed in the report.

Several other major health organizations also backed this recommendation, including the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
