Nvidia announces new raytracing-focused RTX 2080, 2080 Ti graphics cards

The company put out an early press release and microsite promising GeForce RTX 20-series cards from its Aero, Ventus, Sea Hawk, Duke, and Gaming X lines. Nvidia's RTX technology adds new ray-tracing cores for high-quality, real-time rendering with global illumination, and the Tensor cores will speed up creating image detail quickly where there's none.

The new GPUs, based on an architecture codenamed Turing, merge conventional graphics rasterisation, real-time ray tracing, AI, and compute power for the first time.

All of this power is coming packed into the new NVIDIA GeForce RTX 20 series which includes three different cards at launch. As you can see below, there will be both reference and Founders Editions of the cards available.

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Ti is a beast - clocking in with 11GB of GDDR6 RAM and clocked at 14Gbps. It was not at all feasible in 3D games, except it now is (on a somewhat simpler scale) using NVIDIA's new graphics cards. Either way, you can be sure we're going to put the new 20-series cards through the ringer when they become available next month. Ray tracing works similarly, where rays of light hit objects and then bounce off to the camera, sometimes directly, sometimes after hitting other objects in the vicinity, just like in real life. I was excited before - now I'm excited and really want an RTX card.

However with RTX, Nvidia is making the ability to calculate calculate these complicated scenes way faster, and even quick enough for ray tracing to be used in real-time - such as in another recent teaser demo. "Thanks to the AI and hardware light-ray acceleration built into GeForce RTX GPUs, games using these futuristic features are right around the corner".
