West Nile Virus leads to death of Kent County man

The Montana Department of Health and Human Services reports the first West Nile Virus-related death in the state since 2016.

Maine's Health and Environmental Testing Laboratory confirmed the presence of West Nile virus in a single mosquito pool, which is a collection that contains between 1-50 mosquitoes, last Tuesday in Kittery.

There have also been 22 human cases of West Nile confirmed to date for 2018 with two residents contracting the virus in the Will and DuPage County portions of Aurora.

IDPH officials say past year, the first human West Nile virus death in IL wasn't reported until September 29th.

In a statement, IDPH Director Nirav Shah M.D., J.D. says that while the end of summer is nearing, "West Nile virus remains a risk until the first hard frost". The person became ill in early August while on a cross country road trip and was hospitalized. While most people infected with the mosquito-borne virus show no symptoms, others can develop fever, headache, body aches and stiffness.

They can not be transmitted from human to human or animal to human.

Keep mosquitoes outside: Use air conditioning, or window and door screens.
