Ohio State University trustee resigns over lack of Urban Meyer punishment

University spokesman Chris Davey told the Columbus Dispatch on Tuesday that Herman was the Buckeyes assistant who was mentioned but unnamed in a 23-page investigation report of Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer's handling of domestic abuse accusations against Smith.

"You read the [investigators'] report", Wadsworth told The New York Times, "and there's seven or eight things about emails, memory loss, hearing things five times, and to me, that raised an issue of standards, values - not how many games someone should be suspended for".

Wadsworth said he was the "lone voice" pushing for a more severe punishment.

"To me", he added, "there was something altogether wrong about reducing it to a couple of games".

Ohio State says Wadsworth, a retired president of Battelle Memorial Institute, was "an exceptionally valuable member of the board", where he'd served since 2010.

In an email, Ohio State confirmed that Wadsworth stepped down from the board last week.

Attempts by WOSU to reach Wadsworth have so far been unsuccssful.

Smith was sacked in July after reports surfaced of domestic violence claims made against him by his ex-wife Courtney Smith in 2009 - when Meyer and Zach Smith were at Florida - and 2015, when the two were at Ohio State. Deliberations by the board lasted nearly 12 hours behind closed doors.

Meyer will miss the first three games of the season as a result.

Ohio State launched into an investigation into what Meyer knew about the domestic abuse allegations against former assistant coach Zach Smith, after placing Meyer on paid leave on August 1.

Wadsworth said he could not defend the outcome of the board's report and punishment, and the critical fallout that ensued nationally.

Ohio State fired receivers coach and head recruiter Zach Smith in July, following a trepassing incident involving his ex-wife Courtney Smith, who filed for a protection order. However, the review concluded that both "failed to take sufficient management action relating to Zach Smith's misconduct".
