Pirates Acquire Chris Archer From Rays

Chris Archer headed to Pirates in trade deadline surprise

Stephen Nesbitt of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is being told that the Pirates do, in fact, have a deal in place to acquire Chris Archer.

The Pirates have been aggressive this summer despite sending Gerrit Cole and Andrew McCutchen away during the offseason.

It's an odd move for the Pirates, who sit in third in the NL Central, back seven games of the Cubs, and 3 1/2 back of the Diamondbacks of the second wild card.

Meadows was one of the Pirates' top prospects before making his big-league debut earlier this season. Glasnow, 24, has a history of dominant starting pitching in the minors, but has struggled with his control at the big-league level and has worked out of the Pittsburgh bullpen with mediocre results in 2018.

China says United States ‘blackmail’ won’t work, warns of retaliation on tariffs
Beijing retaliated with matching tariffs on the same amount of U.S. exports to China. He also has threatened a further round of tariffs on $300 billion of Chinese goods .

Archer was one of the most desired pieces at this year's deadline, with multiple teams - including the Pirates, Milwaukee Brewers, and Atlanta Braves - connected to him.

Archer, 29, is 2-5 with a 4.31 ERA and a K/BB ratio of 102/31 over 96 innings in 17 starts on the year.

But wait! Archer's inked to a contract that includes relatively low-priced team options for the 2020 and 2021 season, he's still on the short side of 30 years old, and he's undoubtedly got great stuff. Many believe that Glasnow, in his third season in the bigs, is on the brink of a breakthrough, combining high velocity and an excellent curveball and offspeed pitch.
