Reddit's Been Hacked - Here's How to Check if It Hit You

Reddit discloses ‘serious’ security breach it discovered on June 19th

Since June 19, we've been working with cloud and source code hosting providers to get the best possible understanding of what data the attacker accessed.

Even if Reddit doesn't force you to reset your password, doing so anyways is a good idea just to make sure all of your bases are covered.

Reddit noted that the hacker only gained "read-only" access instead of "write access" in their company systems, meaning the backup data and source code, as well as other logs, were not accessed.

"This is personally identifiable data that's been exposed in what is unequivocally a data breach, why on earth wouldn't you notify people?" said renowned security researcher Troy Hunt, a specialist in data breaches affecting consumers.

This includes a complete copy of an old database backup of Reddit user data from the site's launch in 2005 through May 2007.

How to tell if your information was included: We are sending a message to affected users and resetting passwords on accounts where the credentials might still be valid.

Furthermore, two-factor authentication is something that everyone should be using by now.

"We learned that SMS-based authentication is not almost as secure as we would hope", wrote Mr Slowe.

West Nile Virus Detected in Madison Mosquito
The state department of health confirms three new cases of the West Nile virus, two in Hinds County and one in Itawamba County. The DOH advises that Bay County residents take the necessary precautions to stop mosquitoes from multiplying.

The attackers would only be able to do this if they could intercept the SMS codes, either by hacking the Signaling System Seven (SS7) that wireless carriers refuse to fix, even when called out by members of Congress, or by social engineering the porting of the Reddit employees' phone numbers to the hackers' own phones.

The hackers, however, were able to intercept those text messages. We've reached out to Reddit for further clarification.

What was accessed: Logs containing the email digests we sent between June 3 and June 17, 2018.

"The digests connect a username to the associated email address and contain suggested posts from select popular and safe-for-work subreddits you subscribe to", Reddit added.

The one limiting factor with security keys is that relatively few Web sites now allow users to use them.

Not all users receive the email digest, but for those signing up in the U.S., the feature is switched on by default. Its global user base is 330m - similar to Twitter. Nor would the person provide a figure for how many users were receiving the email digest at the time of the breach. Here's what steps it says users should take: "If your account credentials were affected and there's a chance the credentials relate to the password you're now using on Reddit, we'll make you reset your Reddit account password".

The company also did not respond to a follow up question asking for more details on how it plans to inform users directly about the risk.
