Russian Federation vows to retaliate against 'illegal' new USA sanctions

US State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said the action was aimed at punishing Russian President Vladimir Putin's government for having "used chemical or biological weapons in violation of global law".

President Trump's hopes for a thaw in relations between Moscow and Washington appeared to have been dashed last night as Russian Federation signalled it was ready for a full-blown economic war over the America's decision to impose sanctions in response to the Salisbury nerve-agent attack.

The Trump administration's decision to impose further sanctions against Russia following the poisoning of former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter in the United Kingdom earlier this year is "categorically unacceptable" and "illegal", according to President Vladimir Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

The new sanctions will take effect on or around August 22, and relate to exports of electronic components and other technologies.

The sanctions being used by the United States of America are economic - they ban companies from selling goods to Russian Federation.

Last month, British Prime Minister Theresa May urged Trump to raise the issue of the poisonings when he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, although it remained unclear whether the subject came up in their talks. British police scoured sections of Salisbury and Amesbury in southwest England, searching for a container feared to be contaminated with traces of the deadly nerve agent Novichok. One of them, Dawn Sturgess, died eight days later.

European countries and the United States expelled 100 Russian diplomats after the attack, in the strongest action by Trump against Russia since he came to office.

The spokesperson went on to say Russian American relations are at a record low point and the US continues to deteriorate bilateral ties.

The Financial Stability Board - an worldwide body that monitors and makes recommendations about the global financial system, said in a 2018 report, that Russia's financial system "continued to suffer from weak governance, including sometimes non-transparent ownership structures and deficiencies in reporting".

The announcement in Washington was likely to intensify troubles for the ruble, which took a hit Wednesday along with the stock market over rumors of separate new tough USA sanctions over election meddling.

Washington had become an unpredictable player on the worldwide stage, Peskov added, saying "anything could be expected" from it and that it was important that Russia's financial system, which he described as stable, was prepared.

"The categories covered by this (sanctions) include such things as electronics, computers, sensors and lasers, telecommunications, specialized oil and gas production equipment and information security technologies just to name a few", the official said.

Peskov was referring to the nerve-agent attack on former spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in March.

A senior State Department official estimated the sanctions could affect hundreds of millions of dollars in trade with Russian Federation. Rand Paul hand-delivered a letter from Mr. Trump to Putin, asking for "expanding dialogue".

The sanctions came as an eagerly-watched contest for a previously safe Republican seat in the U.S. congress went to the wire, leading to speculation that voters were turning against Donald Trump and could punish the Republican Party at mid-term elections.
