Sony Announces 3 Million PlayStation VR Headsets Have Been Sold To Gamers

Sony this morning announced that the PlayStation VR has sold through more than 3 million units to consumers, worldwide, reaching a pretty significant milestone for the impressive piece of PS4 add-on hardware.

In addition to 3 million in sales of the hardware, Sony said it has sold 21.9 million games and "experiences" for the device. One of the games is a VR boxing experience that is based on the Creed movie that fits into the Rocky universe.

That is set to launch on September 25, with sci-fi shooting game Evasion due out on October 9. In this shooter, you play as one of four unique hero classes tasked with saving an embattled colony.

The firm revealed that The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim VR was the most played game so far on the platform, just ahead of PlayStation VR Worlds - the introductory title containing five experiences created to acclimatise users with virtual reality. Pre-orders begin today at 8am PT. Among them are The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR, PlayStation VR Worlds, Rec Room, Resident Evil 7 Biohazard, and The Playroom VR. You can find a full list of discounted games on Sony's website.

The numbers of PSVR compared to those of competitors (and competitors is a stretch considering the only VR unit capable of being used with a PlayStation is PSVR) are very telling. Nearly 340 games are available for the system, Sony said, and it shared the 10 most popular to show that PSVR owners are playing a variety of games. This help get you attuned to Survios' Phantom Melee technology which has been created to make the melee combat have greater impact. The next step in that journey is likely a second-gen headset although most believe that won't happen until the arrival of the PlayStation 5.
