Police ID suspect in killing of George H.W. Bush's doctor

"There was a lot of planning and sadly some skill".

They began searching for him after receiving an anonymous tip, police said, without providing further details.

"This man is unsafe, this man is capable, this man has some skills (with firearms)", he said.

The man suspected of killing a Houston cardiologist was a former law enforcement officer who recently tried to sell several guns and ammo.

Dr. Mark Hausknecht, who treated former President George H.W. Bush, was fatally shot as he rode to work at Houston Methodist Hospital on July 20. Neighbors had not seen Pappas in about two days and had sent a text Tuesday morning indicating that he was going to kill himself, police said.

"If you think about his fascination with the doctor and the fact that he ends up killing this man in cold blood, the only thing we can think of is the connection between his mother dying over 20 years ago during surgery", Acevedo said.

Acevedo told reporters that evidence indicated Pappas put a lot of planning into the alleged crime.

Joseph James Pappas, 65, is charged with capital murder.

Some gun rights groups say the technology is expensive, the guns are unreliable and the threat is being overblown. But tonight, 3P printers find themselves among America's gun debate.

Spencer said another of her daughters knew Pappas was angry with "a doctor" over the death of his mother, but didn't know his name.

'It appears that this may be a 20-year-old grudge, ' he added.

The police received a tip on Tuesday after CCTV video was released on Monday which showed the suspect, who someone claimed they recognised.

Hausknecht's wife, Georgia Hsieh, said police told her that her husband was riding through a construction site when the gunman rode up in front of him and fired three shots while facing him.

Police identified the suspect as Joseph James Pappas, 65. Authorities say the shooter rode past Hausknecht before turning around and firing.

After the shooting on July 20, authorities released surveillance footage of the suspect riding away from the scene on his own bicycle. Channel 2 Investigates learned Julia Pappas died of natural causes on April 2, 1997, due to cardiovascular atherosclerotic disease, according to the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

"Mark was a fantastic cardiologist and a good man".

Among those patients was former President George H.W. Bush, who appeared next to Hausknecht during a 2000 news conference at the hospital after being treated for an irregular heartbeat. "I will always be grateful for his exceptional, compassionate care", the statement read.
