Stocks fell sharply Thursday after Bloomberg reported the Trump administration could follow through with tariffs on roughly $200 billion worth of Chinese imports as soon as a public comment period ends next week.

China's manufacturing sector is under pressure from higher borrowing costs, cooling investment and consumer spending, and a potential shock to exports as a result of the trade frictions with the United States.

It also suggests that if any tariffs were to be imposed, they would be enacted in installments.
