Twitter has suspended the U.S. conspiracy theorist Alex Jones for a week for breaking its rules against abusive behaviour.

Jones' account has been placed in a read-only mode for seven days, Twitter confirmed Tuesday, meaning he can still browse Twitter posts, but he can't interact with other users by tweeting or retweeting or liking other posts.

Police were called to the Cedarbrook Plaza Shopping Center at 1000 Easton Road shortly after 6 p.m. A police SUV was also struck by a auto as police respond to another active crime scene nearby.

CNET first reported that Jones has to delete an offending tweet, although it was unclear which tweet has been singled out.

A Twitter spokesperson said the action was taken for tweets containing a video that was in violation of the company's rules on abusive behaviour and inciting violence.

But Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey defended his company's decision last week not to ban Jones, saying he did not break any rules. Jones's apps still remain available via Apple's App Store and Google's Play store, however. "And we'll continue to promote a healthy conversational environment by ensuring tweets aren't artificially amplified".
