Two arrested in Chile over bomb threats that caused flight chaos

Chilean authorities arrested the suspected prank caller who disrupted nine commercial flights on Thursday by alleging they were planted with bombs, Chile's Investigation Police (PDI) said on Friday.

Police are investigating the incidents.

According to Chilean law enforcement agencies, we are talking about the flights of the airlines LATAM Airlines and Sky Airline. "Right now the situation is under control", it said in a statement on Twitter.

Several airliners were forced to make emergency landings or turn back to their original airports in Chile and Peru. In two cases, the bomb threat was obviously a hoax, because the caller spoke about non-existent flights.

A LATAM Airlines flight carrying passengers from Peru's capital of Lima to Santiago, Chile, was safely evacuated after making an unscheduled landing in the southern Peruvian city of Pisco, officials said.

All of the planes were declared free of explosives, and at least one plane was later allowed to resume its flight, he said.

"The affected passengers will be transferred by LATAM onto other flights", it said.

"Our technical teams used georeferencing to determine their locations, which led to the arrest of an individual, 29, with no prior record", said Rojas. "It was determined to be a joke - it was a awful joke - and today he will have to face a constitutional court".
