August and September are when most human cases of West Nile Virus occur.

The decision to raise the risk level - the second time officials have ever raised it statewide - comes as 162 of the 351 cities in towns in MA are already considered to be at moderate risk for the virus. The first human case in IL is not usually reported until July or later.

The health department urged residents of Tooele County to take precautions to prevent mosquito bites and the spread of the virus.

Last year, the Spokane Regional Health District confirmed eight people in the county had the virus.

These tests can take up to an hour, during which time the patient must stay completely still so as not to distort the image. In April, CNBC reported that Facebook asked several major US hospitals to share anonymized data for a new research project.

Steve Galloway worked outside often enough to know that grass and sitting water attracts mosquitoes, but he's also aware that the hard work that he puts in will eventually lead to a bite here an there.

There is no specific treatment for West Nile virus other than to treat symptoms. Signs of the virus include flu-like symptoms, where the horse seems mildly anorexic and depressed. "Mosquitoes carry many diseases that can cause serious illnesses", said Dr. desVignes-Kendrick, local health authority and director of Health and Human Services. Use a repellent with an EPA-registered ingredient (DEET (N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide), permethrin, picaridin (KBR 3023), oil of lemon eucalyptus [p-methane 3, 8-diol (PMD)] or IR3535) according to the instructions on the product label. The hours from dusk to dawn are peak biting times for many mosquitoes. It could take up to 14 days for symptoms to occur and those over 60 years old are at the highest risk.

Clothing Can Help Reduce Mosquito Bites.

Officials are encouraging MA residents to use insect repellent with an EPA-registered ingredient when outdoors, to be aware of peak mosquito hours (from dusk to dawn), to wear long-sleeves, long trousers and socks when outdoors and to mosquito-proof your home by draining standing water and installing or repairing screens. Empty any unused flowerpots and wading pools, and change the water in birdbaths frequently. Fix or replace screens that have tears or other openings. In communities where there are organized mosquito control programs, contact your municipal government to report areas of stagnant water in roadside ditches, flooded yards and similar locations that may produce mosquitoes. Try to keep doors and windows shut, especially at night. You should protect your pets, too, as animals can get the virus, you can speak with your veterinarian about mosquito repellents approved for use in animals. Sightings of sick or dying crows or blue jays should be reported to any health department.
