John McCain passed away at the age of 81 on August 25, just one day after announcing that he wouldn't continue seeking medical treatment for the "aggressive" form of cancer he was battling.

Even while he battled cancer and moved back to his Arizona home for treatment, McCain continued to stay relevant in the political arena. But the progress of disease and the inexorable advance of age render their verdict.

"It's been quite a ride", McCain, who was tortured during five years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam, wrote in a memoir published earlier this year.

On Saturday night, a black hearse accompanied by a police motorcade could be seen driving away from the ranch near Sedona, Arizona, where the Republican senator spent his final weeks.

Most recently, he has been a thorn in the side of President Donald Trump, keeping up his criticism of the White House even while undergoing severe medical treatment in Arizona.

Trump, who received serial deferments and did not serve in the military, said that McCain was "a war hero (only) because he was captured", adding, "I like people that weren't captured". In a dramatic turn, he later cast the deciding vote against the Republican health care bill, earning Trump's enduring wrath.

Former presidents, including those who blocked Mr McCain's own White House ambitions, offered emotional tributes. But he and running mate Sarah Palin lost to Barack Obama.

McCain is survived by his wife of almost 40 years, Cindy, and his five children, Meghan, Bridget, John, James and Sidney. "He was a leader who served with unquestionable and unwavering love for his country", said Inslee.

Dutch police: Suspect in boy's slaying detained in Spain
Dutch police confirmed: "Jos B, 55, a suspect in the death of Nicky Verstappen was arrested in Spain on Sunday afternoon". After the longest-running murder hunt in Dutch history, Jos Brech was arrested at a campsite near Barcelona yesterday.

"The spirit that drove him was never extinguished: we are here to commit ourselves to something bigger than ourselves", Mr Biden said.

Other plans were taking shape, too.

Throughout his long tenure in Congress, McCain played his role with trademark verve, at one hearing dismissing a protester by calling out, "Get out of here, you low-life scum". "John McCain was one of them", Mr Schumer said.

"Maybe most of all, he was a truth teller - never afraid to speak truth to power in an era where that has become all too rare".

Cindy was McCain's first wife. Our hearts are with his wife, Cindy, his children, and his grandchildren.

"I am so lucky to have lived this adventure of loving this incredible man for 38 years".

McCain's daughter, Meghan McCain mourned the death of her father in a sentimental Twitter post. "I've lived very well and I've been deprived of all comforts". "We honour his lifetime of service to this nation in our military and in public life. And I will miss him dearly".
