"U can't let that happen", Grassley, R-Iowa, tweeted.

Axios first reported on Wednesday of Mcgann's pending exit, and reported that his preferred successor is Emmet Flood, who works in the office of the White House Counsel.

News of McGahn's departure comes after it was revealed he was questioned by Robert Mueller's "Russiagate" investigation.

Interested in Donald Trump? Prior to that, he was chairman of the Federal Election Commission.

Emmet Flood, who now directs the Russian Federation legal strategy from inside the White House, is a potential replacement, CNN reported last week.

Mr Mueller's probe into claims that Russian Federation intervened in the 2016 USA elections is dogging the Trump presidency.

It is not unusual for White House counsels to come and go during an administration.

In a sharply worded tweet earlier this month, Mr Trump said he had allowed Mr McGahn to give testimony to the special counsel.

McGahn has led the Trump Administration's efforts to reshape the judiciary while confronting turmoil in the West Wing surrounding the ongoing Special Counsel probe. All of which suggests that Trump's focus will be far more on the Mueller investigation and the Cohen investigation than on legal priorities in other areas.

The White House lawyer reportedly threatened to resign previous year because Mr Trump was planning to remove Mr Mueller.

Before working at the White House, McGahn was a campaign finance attorney at Jones Day, a Washington law firm that has filled several top legal roles within the Trump administration.

Trump has continued to apply public pressure on his attorney general, telling Fox News last week that Sessions never had control of the Justice Department and that the only reason he selected him was because he had been loyal on the campaign trail.
